My Take on our first Day of Bargaining 2013

So today's the day, our team is at the table officially. I wish them well. Here's to fair bargaining, and here's to improvements in health and safety, benefits, language and hours for casuals.

We need to be able to allow for a system and workplace where these members are valued and can make a decent living. Many of our casuals have to work two or three jobs to make ends meet. They are on call pretty much 24/7 in order to get enough hours to make ends meet. Most have to remain casual for a minimum 10years before they are even close to be able to apply for full time. Then if you are lucky....and speak French you may get a chance at one the few jobs that get posted. We have English casuals with upwards of 20years seniority waiting for opportunities.

The workers at the LCBO are on system where workers are doing the same job making very different wages simply based on status....this is shameful.

Casuals in our C and D stores (smaller stores mainly based in rural areas) are forced to accept 2 hour shifts, some have to travel large distances to "get" that valued 2 hours. For an employer who boasts a whopping 4.7 billion in sales last year it is unacceptable to be forcing workers to accept less than the Ontario Employment Standards Act simply because you can...

This employer wants to create a part time Ontario where there are no pensions, no benefits, no "good jobs" in our communities. Good jobs create a better community as the money people make gets spent in the community.

Let's get behind our bargaining team and show them we have their backs during this round....I urge members to get "Loud and Proud" plan some local activities to show the employer you know what's going on and are paying attention.

Here's to getting a FAIR Deal!!!
